TOW 1.0 - Dwarf Mountain Holds, Royal Clan & Expeditionary Force

Recommended Posts

  • Clan's Cynic changed the title to TOW 1.0 - Dwarf Mountain Holds, Royal Clan & Expeditionary Force

A review of the arcane journal that is quite good :

Doomseekers look amazing (you can only take 4 in the Royal Clan Army, though, and they're always mercenaries). The bugman cart can be interesting to play a more offensive dwarf army. I'm a bit disappointed in the armies of infamy, though : they can be interesting, but I feel like they're a bit too restrictive in their playstyle.

let the grudging begin.

ps: I hope It is fine if I’m posting picture of well dwarf models that are not quite from gw (I bought these from fireforge minaitures, which are known as stone realm dwarfs or something.

really cool models and their size is pretty much that of the dwarf in old world

I actually quite like the Armies of Infamy. I would have liked to see a non-Ungrim Slayer Cult but I can see why they went the direction they did - I also like that Ungrim is more than just "oops, all Slayers" and acknowledges things like Hammerers.

Doomseekers being Mercenaries in all cases (except Ungrim) is kind of odd though.

I can see myself running Royal Clan as a gimmick a few times, particularly with Cannons and Organ Guns being the weaker Dawi war machines this edition. I do find it amusing they can still take Irondrakes though, considering in 8th they were still new-fangled technology iirc. Royal Clan Warriors do look pretty good. 1pt more for Gromril Weapons and Armour seems solid and they're a good alternative to "oops all Longbeards and Rangers".

TBH, gyrocopters play such a big role in Dwarf armies that their absence in Royal Clans is quite hurting them. But you can always try to take them as allies.

Expeditionnary Force looks much stronger in comparison. Engineer Sappers look quite insane by forcing dangerous terrain for all enemies moves in their command range. Scout gyrocopters feel like they can go and charge more easily enemy war engines and the like. Possibility of moving and shooting with their own war engines / shooting units without the usual penalties is quite huge as well.

Any hints in the book who might be next?

I keep hearing Chaos Warriors next in the Wilds of the Rumour-verse followed by High Elves. Then Empire and Leave Beastmen and Wood Elves last, which sounds about right 🙄

Can highly recommend, they're awesomely fun, and surprisingly quick models to paint. Big shame for people who don't already own them that all the extras, proper standard bearer and plug in handgun and crossbow models from back in the day aren't returning mind!

😁

The rereleased champion and standard bearer seem not to be in here. Do you know if they are original sculpts, unreleased, or newly sculpted/modified?

Yep, they're from the MM11 Dwarf Command groups, released at around the same time in the early 90s

Unsure why GW went for them instead of the originals, would hazard a guess at mould issues. The standard bearer's not a perfect fit, but it should be too hard to stick a flag on one of the spears if you want a better one.

Cool, thanks!! I also think the original standard bearer looks nicer, but the one they included will do fine.

Don’t suppose anyone’s happened across any 3rd party proxies for a bugmans cart at all? Keen to get a couple but I’m not in love with the official model

If you're STL inclined, a quick Google reveals these two, though you'd need to switch the cargo out for some printed barrels:

https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-boar-pulling-miner-cart-225875

This is already has a barrel, and could be matched with a newer plastic Skull Pass or Miner kit pony:

Beer carts are very good, and lot of people with questionable aesthetic taste are going to want to run them but be disinclined to use such an old model, so I'd keep an eye on all the usual suspects for alternative Dwarfs over the next few months:

Hope this helps :)

The Highland miniatures dwarf range (Sons of Ymir) is complete. What I read in their discord is that its Elves (high/wood), rats and evil dwarfs for the rest of 2024 and 2025. So I don't think there will be another Sons of Ymir mini soon.

I really like the Sons of Ymir range, but my new favorite range for dwarfs is Durgin Paint Forge (as linked by @Double Misfire) it ticks all the boxes for me. I suspect he will do a version of bugmans cart eventually.
